why mandalas?

drawing insight out

I have embraced the mandala format because it allows me to spontaneously create miniature worlds rich in color, shapes and patterns. Each drawing starts with an idea, central image or symbol at the mandala’s core that sparks the rest of the design.

The circular construct works like a patchwork quilt, making it possible to effortlessly weave seemingly disparate concepts together. There is a natural continuous flow from one thing to another that builds on its own momentum and enthusiasm.

the magic of the mandala

During this creative process, it’s not uncommon for unplanned figures to emerge from the negative space. The relationship between intentional objects can also literally create other forms.

In the final analysis, the sum of the unique mandala parts can also yield meaningful and unexpected insights. While some provide a very obvious, literal and universal message, they are all open to subjective viewer interpretation. That’s the magic of the mandala.

mandala themes

The mandalas have been loosely grouped by themes but there is a lot of crossover. The abstract design series centers around symbols and bears the closest resemblance to a traditional mandala.

My earth mandalas feature creatures of the land and sea, favorite domestic animals and natural elements, too. Others focus on inspiring people, fictional characters and personalities, spiritual beings and religious figures.

a celebration of circles

Once I started getting hooked on mandalas, I started seeing circles everywhere. They are omnipresent and inescapable, bringing beauty and perfection to the natural world.
